The final chapters of John’s Gospel bring us into the deepest valleys and the most tender moments of our Lord's earthly ministry. From the unjust trial before Pilate to the agonizing moments on the cross and the restoration of Peter on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, we see a Savior whose love never wavers. John 19:4, 26-27, and 21:15 (NKJV) capture these profound truths:
4 "Pilate then went out again, and said to them, 'Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him.'... 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, 'Woman, behold your son!' 27 Then He said to the disciple, 'Behold your mother!' And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home... 15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?' He said to Him, 'Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.' He said to him, 'Feed My lambs.'"
Even the pagan governor, Pilate, had to declare the truth: “I find no fault in Him.” Jesus stood innocent, a spotless lamb led to the slaughter, taking upon Himself a penalty He did not deserve so that we could receive a pardon we could never earn.
In the middle of His own suffering on the cross, Jesus did not turn inward. With bruised flesh and a breaking heart, He looked down and made sure His earthly mother, Mary, was cared for, entrusting her to the Apostle John.
Taking care of our families is a high and holy calling. We all have moments where we fall short in our responsibilities, letting impatience or distraction get the better of us. But we can lean on the Holy Spirit to guide us, honoring those the Lord has placed in our lives with grace, respect, and steadfast devotion.
When Jesus restored Peter by the fire, He asked a piercing question: “Do you love Me more than these?” And when Peter answered yes, Jesus gave him a lifelong assignment: “Feed My lambs.”
We can only truly feed His lambs by His hand. In our own strength, we grow weary. The demands of life, the spiritual battles, and the weight of daily responsibilities can drain us until we feel empty.
Yet, His grace is sufficient for our weakness. He loves us even when we are weary, and He fills our cups so that we can pour into others. Let us rest in His love today, knowing that He walked the road before us and provides the strength we need to keep serving Him faithfully.
